Married to Grief

-----------------------------
See, I didn’t ask for this marriage,
grief found me anyway.
It slipped into my life quietly,
wearing the scent of memories,
I still love.
At first, I resisted,
But grief is loyal
It stays when others fade.
So, I learned to walk with it,
Hand in hand, heart to heart.
It taught me that brokenness
can still be beautiful,
That tears can baptize new strength,
and that love, real love, never dies.
Yes, I am married to grief,
But I am not a widow.
I am a woman still living, still loving
Still becoming
Proof that even after loss,
Life continues and so do I.
About the Author
My name is Sakinah Nacole Freeman and I’m a Licensed Social Worker and Certified Grief Counselor. After becoming a grief counselor in 2021, life taught me its own lessons, losing my eldest sister, husband, and close cousin within three months while battling COVID. These experiences deepened my empathy and strengthened my purpose. Today, as a travel social worker, I use my grief counseling skills daily to support and guide every patient I serve, helping them navigate loss, trauma, and resilience.
